CHAPTER 12

Kodru

The Council of Griolds stare at me while they deliberate what to do with an ogre who has wandered onto their lands. They view my kind as monsters who threaten their existence. Maybe it’s because of how they were captured and brought here in the same way my kind was. They trust no one.

“Why have you come here?” The chief asks, his thick arms crossed over his chest. These people are smaller than me, but only slightly. I can take one, two, maybe three, but not the dozen they have guarding me.

“I saw a pod crash over here.” I lie, or at least I think it’s a lie. I need to find out if they’ve seen other humans like Pippa.

“No pod here. No ships since our arrival.” The leader speaks with great authority, while the others avoid eye contact with him.

However, the looks crossing the others do not escape my notice. They know something. I bide my time hoping to find out more. Outside, it’s growing dark and I’m hoping Pippa will run back to the cave and wait for me there.

“No need to detain me. Let me go, please. I’m not here to harm or rob you. I’m just passing through.” I start to rise, but five guards poke their very sharp spears at me.

“You trespass on our land. Our law says trespassers spend the night as our prisoner.”

“You’ll let me go tomorrow?” My eyes narrow at them.

“Are you on a schedule? What’s going on, Kodlian?”

“My name is Kodru. And no, I’m not on a schedule. I enjoy living by myself and with good reason.” I growl, letting them know of my displeasure with their lack of hospitality.

“Then you won’t mind a night in the cell.” The chief nods and the council meeting is over.

The guards lead me out of the hut and to another which has a metal cage in the center of it. I laugh at the absurdity of it. Rusty metal squares make up the cage, and it’s not large enough to call a cell. It’s something they probably pieced together from before. Rusty metal breaks easily with a little force.

I don’t fight as they put me in the cage, where I must duck in order to fit. It’s not meant for a person as large as me. I glower at them when they shove the lock into place and give me a self-satisfied nod and grin before leaving me alone. Escaping this rust pit will be easy.

A slop pot sits against the cage wall. Another wall has a canteen of water. Good enough. They didn’t remove my belt pouch which also contains water and I left my pack in the thicket with Pippa. I’m sure she left it there, for it’s too heavy for her to carry back to the cave. The village becomes quiet as the Griolds are falling asleep. Thankfully, the hut which houses the cell has no guard. I listen and hear no one, but for good measure I call out quietly.
